A syndicate of 23, who work for a housing partnership in Haverhill, are set to enjoy their best Christmas ever this year after scooping a £2,630,225 Lotto jackpot in the draw on Saturday 15th November.
The syndicate, called “Suffolk Lads and Lasses”, has played Lotto for 10 months. They have always played online, so it was syndicate leader Lucy Czilinsky who first received the news that they’d won. She received an email alert containing the good news that she should check the online account.
“After I had opened the winning email, I can’t describe my feelings when I saw online that we’d won such a large amount of money. I think I just stared at my computer screen for a long time in disbelief! After a few minutes, I composed myself and started to contact other syndicate members to share in the good news - it just felt wonderful to deliver details of our good fortune to everyone.”
The winning line was chosen by caretaker Jill Brown who said: “I was absolutely stunned when I discovered it was my line of numbers that won. I’m delighted because it couldn’t have happened to a nicer bunch of people. We all work incredibly hard and the money will mean a great deal to every single one of us.”
Currently, the Washington’s Lottery offers five draw games; Mega Millions, Lotto, Hit 5, The Daily Game and Daily Keno, with jackpots ranging from $100,000 for Hit 5 to as high as $360 million for Mega Millions.
I love reading stories of lottery winners. Every day when browsing the web I seem to ome accross another story that brings a smile to my face or a tear to my eye. This month I’ve already been focusing quie a few of my posts on revealling what you should or shouldnt do if your one of the lucky few to win a Lottery Jackpot.
A couple of days ago I wrote a long awaited post of what a lottery winner should do once winning. This story below is a case study in just that process of making well thought through, planned and structured investments. I wish I could say Brad read and followed my advice, but he didn’t. Instead I used his story as a source of inspiration for my checklist article.
Brad Duke, 34, a manager for five Gold’s Gym franchises in Idaho, pocketed a lump sum of $85 million after winning a $220 million Powerball jackpot in 2005. He spent the first month of his new life assembling a team of financial advisors. His goal: to use his winnings to become a billionaire. Here’s what Duke has done with his money so far.
$45 million: Safe, low-risk investments such as municipal bonds
$35 million: Aggressive investments like oil and gas and real estate
$1.3 million: A family foundation
$63,000: A trip to Tahiti with 17 friends
$125,000: Mortgage retired on his 1,400-square-foot house
$18,000: Student-loan repayment
$65,000: New bicycles, including a $12,000 BMC road bike
$14,500: A used black VW Jetta
$12,000: Annual gift to each family member

After my last post about a lottery winner, who’s life went bad after winning his millions. I promised I was working on an article on what to do if you win the lottery and want to keep your life in order.
Therefore, here’s my new Lottery Winners to-do list:
1. Keep your winning ticket safe. People often panic and do strange things with their winning ticket. Some people post it to themsleves, store it in the freezer or entrust it to a friend. My advice is to keep it locked away in a safe, bank deposit box or something equally safe and trustworthy.
2. Consider your Job. Don’t go quitting your job as soon as you check your numbers. There are countless stories of people who mis-read their ticket, lose their ticket or don’t correctly work out their post tax take home winnings. You may evenutally quit your job in favor of a higher life. But dont rush into it.
3. Surround yourself with people you can trust. “The most important financial decision to make initially is who’s going to be accountant, financial adviser and lawyer” Don’t always presume that close friends and family will offer you the best advice. Get some independant counsell. Someone whose advice you pay for and as such is independant and legally regulated.
4. Decide on a lump sum or payments. This decision depends on what you want to do with your payout. Get advice from your bought in friends (see #3) If you choose a single lump sum it will end up significantly less than the total payout if you opt for the payments option over a number of years.
5. Arrange for a account at the bank. You can’t just deposit millions into your plain ol’ checking account. And they don’t really give you a paper check with a lot of zeroes.
6. Change your phone number. Now that you’re richer than your wildest dreams, everyone’s going to want to reach out and touch you, and that will be a nightmare. So get a new unlisted telephone number.
I came accross this story on MSN news site Money Central Many people think that winning the lottery is a thing of dreams, where woes are cleared and financial fears removed. The article at MSN lists 8 lottery winner stories that begun dreams and ended as nightmares.
I’m putting together an article for lottery winners to show you what you must do if you win to avoid things going wrong. I’ll post it later in the week, for the time being, read the following nightmare and remember, winning the lottery is great, but its not the saviour of your problems.
Living on food stamps William “Bud” Post won $16.2 million in the Pennsylvania lottery in 1988 but now lives on his Social Security. I wish it never happened. It was totally a nightmare,” says Post.
A former girlfriend successfully sued him for a share of his winnings. It wasn’t his only lawsuit. A brother was arrested for hiring a hit man to kill him, hoping to inherit a share of the winnings. Other siblings pestered him until he agreed to invest in a car business and a restaurant in Sarasota which failed.
Post even spent time in jail for firing a gun over the head of a bill collector. Within a year, he was $1 million in debt. He eventually declared bankruptcy.
Now he lives quietly on $450 a month and food stamps.
“I’m tired, I’m over 65 years old, and I just had a serious operation for a heart aneurysm. Lotteries don’t mean (anything) to me,” says Post.
After some research and investigation I created a quick video that shows you just how easy it is to open an account and buy a lottery ticket online at theLotter.com I’m hoping to hone my skills in coming months and put together a range of videos. If there’s anything specific you’d like to see, let me know!
